Flying over Cancun

Mexico Day 14 / Canada Day 1

My adventure in Mexico was over, but my adventure in Canada was only just beginning. It was almost a shame I'd have to work remotely for some of it.

Barracuda

Mexico Day 13

To make change from spending a lot of time underwater, we instead spent the day on the water, snorkelling. It was a chance to see some sea life, albeit at a bit of a rushed pace, even though we were told it'd be an easy day with no rushing around.

Swimming underwater through a cave

Mexico Day 12

Dodgy scuba equipment and dodgy ears didn't stop me from getting in another day of diving. The rest of the day was relaxing, and deciding what to do tomorrow for the final day.

Light shining down underwater to show a log

Mexico Day 11

This was the first of two days of diving in caves. It wasn't the most comfortable experience even though I enjoyed it, and it was uncertain whether I could do another day.

Chichen Itza

Mexico Day 10

Along the way to Playa del Carmen we stopped by the cenote Ik Kil, and spent some time looking around the world famous ruins of Chichen Itza, and the visually stunning El Castillo.

Jaguar

Mexico Day 9

The plan was to go to Uxmal for a tour, but things didn't exactly go to plan. At one point we weren't sure whether we'd actually get there.

Merida

Mexico Day 8

The day was spent mostly on a bus. Not much else really.

Palenque

Mexico Day 7

When a 'day long' tour turns out to be an hour, you have to find other ways to fill your day. It was lucky the hotel had a pool, but there was only so much time I could spend there. It was a shame it was too warm to run.

Agua Azul

Mexico Day 6

Early starts are never pleasant, but sometimes, needs must. There was a fair but to see in the morning and most of the afternoon would be free to explore. It was one of those days where it would have been nice to have more control over the itinerary.

Chamula

Mexico Day 5

Today we would be looking around two different villages inhabited by the Tzotzil indigenous Mayans. They had their own laws, but their architecture was still very colonial Spanish.

San Cristobal de las Casas

Mexico Day 4

We flew from Mexico City to a place near the Sumidero Canyon to take a boat along that, and then drove on to our overnight stay in San Cristobal de las Casas.

Teotihuacan

Mexico Day 3

One of the sights I really wanted to see in Mexico was Teotihuacán, and as luck was have it, it was one of the first sights I'd get to see.

Mexico City Cathedral

Mexico Day 2

Our first day in Mexico was spent seeing the sights of Mexico City, and trying out the local restaurants. It was quite a relaxed day, but actually saw a lot.

Looking out an aircraft window at clouds at sunset

Mexico Day 1

For my trip to Mexico I was travelling via Toronto as I'd be spending a week there at the end of this trip so in terms of flight costs it made sense to get a return to Toronto, and then the Mexico flights on top of that.

Mexico

The history of South America has interested me for a long time. With TV shows such as The Mysterious Cities of Gold covering pre-Columbian civilisation in the Americas it was something which seemed fascinating. Previous trips have taken me to Peru and Ecuador to see sights such as Machu Picchu, and even earlier examples of civilisation such as the Nazca. Where Machu Picchu offered a glimpse of wh …
