The most important thing today was getting to the train station in Vejle for the 11:01 train to Copenhagen. With the bus out of Billund leaving every thirty minutes, and the closest one arriving nine minutes before the train is scheduled to leave, we really needed to catch the bus before that one just in case it was running late.
We left out around 09:30, put the key back in the lockbox, and started our walk to the bus stop. As we got there it seemed the 143 would arrive first so we queued there, but when we saw a 43 arriving one the other side of the road we made a quick decision to cross, and take that instead. The decision worked out well as it got us into Vejle with thirty nine minutes to spare.
As we were running low on food again we got a chicken sandwich with chili mayo each from the 7Eleven along with some crisps and brownies. The train though was not as nice as the previous one we’d taken and was full of school children on their way to Copenhagen. It meant no table, but we did at least have seats.
We got into Copenhagen around 13:10 after a delay where the train was waiting outside the station for ten minutes. There were still two Metro trains ahead of us to get to where we’d be staying in the Amager part of Copenhagen.
The sun was warm by this point, but it was only a short walk to the apartment - halfway between Lergravsparken and Øresund stations. For this apartment I was given a mobile phone number for their neighbour to call between 13:30 and 14:30. When the person answered the phone she put it down within seconds, but then called back a minute later. They buzzed me in, and it was then four flights of stairs lugging our suitcases up with us. She passed us the key to the apartment and demonstrated how to turn on the shower, after having to remember how to herself first. It smelt quite bad in there though, as the toilet had not been flushed for some time.
Despite that, the apartment seemed nice enough for the next two nights. We relaxed there for a while before heading out into the warm late afternoon sun, in the direction of the beach. Amager Strandpark used to be just the beach along the coastline, but they have created a two kilometre long beach on an artificial island that has resulted in a lagoon between the two. We walked much of the new island, and stopped for an ice cream at the end. I had one scoop of peanut and chocolate ice cream, that seemed much more than just one scoop.
Carmen had discovered there was a race in Malmö tomorrow afternoon, and we seriously considered it - thinking it’d be amusing to go home having done a parkrun and race in Denmark, and then the same in Sweden. Sadly the race was at capacity so wasn’t something we could enter on the day.
As we walked back, the sun began to set, but we made one more stop so I could photograph a heron that was fishing in the lagoon. We then stopped again to get some snacks from Lidl, and got back to the apartment just as the sun was setting.
In Denmark you can use delivery services such as Wolt, and we thought using that might be an idea. We found somewhere that could deliver Stegt flæsk, one of the local dishes that had been recommended, but the price would have been the equivalent of £50 for the two of us for what is essentially chops and potatoes with some sauce. It seemed too much, so we looked around on Google Maps, and found Grill 110 which was on the same block as us. They did the same dish, and for two people it cost just 162 DKK (around £18). It was a very big portion each, and felt like we'd found a bargain in a city that is well known for high food prices.
With our plans for tomorrow needing an early start, we used the evening to prepare our running clothes and everything we’d need. The shower was an interesting one - it was a shower head attached to the basin taps, with two curtains to protect the bathroom door, and the toilet. It was difficult to get the right temperature, and it was quite dark in there, but it could have been much worse. At least I had a proper towel this time.
