The focus for today was getting from Copenhagen to Billund, to see the home of the world famous LEGO bricks. This meant we could have a later start today, and still have enough time for everything we need to do. We finished packing, had breakfast, and then tidied the apartment ready for checkout.
We headed to Østerport, dragging the suitcases over cobblestones hopefully for the last time. From there we needed to find a train to Copenhagen Central Station, which it seemed all the trains heading west would stop at. The problem though is there didn't seem to be a board saying what went where when, just what was next, so we had to pick a train with a big enough window of time for us to reach it.
I quickly got my ticket using the DOT app for 24 DKK on the platform, but Carmen's mobile was giving her issues with it. I did at one point wonder if the train we were sitting on was now the wrong one after the destination had changed on the board, and we got off the train just in case. I then saw that despite the destination change, it was still going through Copenhagen Central, so we quickly got back on. I felt bad for stressing her out like that, on top of the existing app problem, but I had to be sure I wasn't making a mistake. Fortunately Carmen managed to get her ticket sorted just as the train left the station.
It was a fair wait in the station before boarding the ICL 43 to Vejle. The train had onboard Wi-Fi so that would at least provide some entertainment for the next two hours. We also made some packed lunch amongst the food we were taking with us.
After leaving Copenhagen, the sun was out, but only until we reached the first of the bridge crossings. Then it was cloud cover once more until sometime after we left Odense. The train got busier at Fredericia, but it was only for about fifteen minutes when we pulled into Vejle.
There was about seven minutes between the train arriving, and the 43 bus leaving. In my planning for this connection I'd made a note of it anyway, and the time for the next one just in case. We missed that first one by seconds, but only had a thirty minute wait until the next bus to Billund. For some of that time we waited outside in the sun, but for the first time on this trip it was actually starting to get too warm.
It takes around forty minutes from Vejle to Billund Centre, with the last couple of stops before this being the Billund airport (the entire town is under the flight path), and Legoland.
We hauled our luggage along the streets until we found where we’d be staying. This was a three bedroom bungalow in a cul-de-sac that backs onto the main road through Billund. As the previous place had let us down on towels, this was the first thing I checked. This one seemed perfect.
We relaxed for a while, and then headed out for a walk to see what was around. If we'd thought about it, we could easily have looked around the Teddy Bear Art museum that Carmen had seen. Instead we wandered around the town, and bought some cookie dough cheesecake we could eat later. We found the LEGO House easily enough, took a couple of photographs, and then walked to the nearby Netto to stock up on supplies.
We spent the remainder of the evening back at the bungalow, and cooked some pasta with frikadeller. We also noticed how well we could hear aircraft flying into Billund Airport.
